Er, so what is COREC?

COREC is a new word for Nikki and I (as design workers), but as a medical researcher, it's something Ian knows plenty about. It is an anacroym fo the "Central Office for Research Ethics Committees". In a nutshell, COREC is the part of the NHS which looks after the welfare of members of the public who participate in medical research. This means that each new medical research project must apply to COREC for approval before it can go ahead. There is a large form which forms the basis of this application, this can be downloaded as a pdf here.

COREC ensures that when we work with couples in this project, we are clear about the scope of our research; the way we will use their cells, along with the purpose of the research. Biojewellery is an opt-in project, based on consent and openess. It's vital for us that everyone is clear about what is going on, and beyond the role of COREC this extends to learning about COREC, and then explaining their role and the implications of this role to the participants. If you want to play a mork active part in COREC's work, you can mecome a member of a regional Research Ethics Comitte, and see how individual research applications are considered, more here.
